Thanks to Duke we have the answer to our puzzle. My nephew Daniel got the one where you take the word 'sailor',add a letter and mix it up to make a word that has been a navigational help throughout history.The answer:polaris.
Here's the next problem:
A certain U.S. state of three syllables, when wedged between two other letters, results in a two-syllable word meaning"previous,bypast",and "inevitable,as a conclusion."

Okay,I found this contest in a magazine and the prize is a trip. The questions are hard. Can anyone get this one?
