Go Crusaders!

What a great football season so far! Matt is playing with his highschool team and the games have been very exciting. He's been starting, which is really fun since he didn't play much last year. A little bench time- does it build character or just frustrate the heck out of you? We realised that the boys who played the most were the ones who showed up every morning at 7 A.M. to go through their weight training, signed up for football camp, came to first practise already fit. So he did all that, and it really has paid off for him. I drop him off at school on my way to work at 7.

Fires in the Fall

When we were kids, the fall was bonfire time. Not the now common arson-in-the-dumpster bonfire, or backyard campfire variety, but it was a time when the Dads in the neighborhood would 'turn over the garden patch' with a spade and build a bonfire to get rid of the garden refuse. We kids loved it. We would roam from backyard to backyard looking for more stuff to burn so we could keep the fire burning longer. It was done in the evening, which made it even more magical. That's why this snippet of a verse by R.L.Stevenson struck my fancy. At least I think it was Stevenson!
Sing a song of seasons
Something good in all
Flowers in the springtime
Fires in the fall.
