Fires in the Fall
When we were kids, the fall was bonfire time. Not the now common arson-in-the-dumpster bonfire, or backyard campfire variety, but it was a time when the Dads in the neighborhood would 'turn over the garden patch' with a spade and build a bonfire to get rid of the garden refuse. We kids loved it. We would roam from backyard to backyard looking for more stuff to burn so we could keep the fire burning longer. It was done in the evening, which made it even more magical. That's why this snippet of a verse by R.L.Stevenson struck my fancy. At least I think it was Stevenson!
Sing a song of seasons
Something good in all
Flowers in the springtime
Fires in the fall.
Sing a song of seasons
Something good in all
Flowers in the springtime
Fires in the fall.

Yes, I don't know which I like better - fall bonfires, or spring flood waterfights!
